What a day! Arrived at MHT at 4 a.m. for a 6:00 a.m. flight. Given that I got a late start on packing, I didn’t get a chance to go to bed. Fortunately, I was able to get a couple power naps in along the way. No checked baggage is the way to go. I almost had a snafu because there was no place available in the overhead bins, but the flight attendant was kind enough to take my suitcase to the front of the plane and store it with his personal luggage. The view flying in to San Salvador was spectacular. So verde (green)!Security and customs went pretty smoothly. When I was asleep the customs forms were handed out to the passengers; consequently everyone had theirs—except me! I was wisked through nonetheless (the inspector filled mine out; the US Army has some clout down here!).
Arrived at the hotel around 3 (mountain time). Numerous coconut venders on the side of the road, pedestrians darting across highways, passengers in the back of pickup trucks, and aggressive drivers.

Once at the hotel, we ladies jumped into the pool, sat in the tropical sun for a spell, and then headed out to dinner—reminder: no salad (ever!); bottled water only. Enchiladas verdes were quite good. All food and drinks will be carefully scrutinized over the next few days. I do not want to get sick…period! How will I ever remember to keep my mouth closed while showering, use bottled water to brush my teeth, and to always avoid ice cubes?
Following dinner, we were briefed on San Salvadorian security by an NCIS agent. Holy moly! Between the murders, rapes, robberies, gangs, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, insects, snakes, traffic accidents, food poisoning, dengue fever, and swine flu, I think we shouldn't leave our hotel rooms…but of course we will.
Yahoo! The Internet works; bringing my MacBook along was a great idea.
